In my last QnA session of the Million Dollar Coach program, one of my clients asked, “How are balancing energy as a coach during sessions?” While the question was important to answer, I remembered how many times I’ve been in the same situation.

During the early days of my career, I used to have very low energy days because I was taking classes and there were people whose negative talk entered my head. The next sessions were difficult for me because my energy declined and it made an already energised session, a dull one!

And as a life coach, I have seen many coaches going through the same thing. The reason could be anything, a toxic relationship, a job that doesn’t align with your values or even negative self-talk that eats away at your positivity.

Clients too drain your energy by constantly seeking validation, attention, or advice without reciprocating or acting on your guidance.  Let me tell you something you might already know but often forget in the heat of the moment. We all have our energy, and it’s up to us to decide how we feel and respond to the energy of those around us.

Your primary goal as a coach is to guide and empower your clients on their transformative journeys. To effectively support them, it is crucial to maintain a balanced energy state and prevent the transfer of low energy.

In this blog post, we will explore how you can balance your energy as a coach, manage burnout, and the role of mindset in this process.

How Can I Balance My Energy As A Coach?

1. Understanding Energy Dynamics

Energy is a fundamental aspect of our being, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional states. It is not a static force but rather constantly in motion. As a coach, it is vital to comprehend how energy operates and how external factors and our internal states can influence it.

External factors, such as the environment, the client’s energy, or the coaching space, can impact the energy exchange during sessions.

Equally important are your internal states as a coach. Your thoughts, emotions, and overall mindset profoundly impact the energy you bring to the coaching sessions.

By recognizing that you have the power to affect the energy exchange, you become mindful of your energy and the energetic space you create.

Intentional efforts should be made to maintain a positive and balanced energy flow during coaching sessions. Engage in activities that help you release negative or stagnant energy and cultivate a positive mindset.

This might include mindfulness exercises, meditation, breathwork, or engaging in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.

By understanding energy dynamics and taking conscious steps to maintain a positive and balanced energy flow, you create an environment that fosters your clients’ growth, insight, and transformation. Your awareness of the energetic exchange empowers you to be intentional in your approach and ensures that your clients receive the best possible support from you as a coach.

2. Setting Boundaries

Establishing boundaries is crucial for balancing energy as a coach.

Clearly define the limits of your role and communicate them to your clients. This includes determining your availability, response time, and emotional involvement. Setting boundaries allows you to preserve energy, prevent burnout, and maintain objectivity while providing better support.

Emotional involvement is another aspect of boundaries. While empathy and compassion are vital in coaching, it’s important to maintain objectivity and avoid becoming overly emotionally invested. Recognize that your role is to support and guide your clients, but their journey is ultimately their responsibility. Set boundaries around emotional involvement to prevent your energy from being drained or negatively influenced.

3. Mindset: Harnessing the Power Within

Your mindset plays a vital role in maintaining energy balance.

Cultivate a positive and growth-oriented mindset that supports your well-being and resilience as a coach. By nurturing a positive mindset, you can navigate challenges with grace, inspire your clients, and prevent low energy transfer.

a. Practice self-reflection regularly

Examine your thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes towards yourself and your coaching practice. Identify any negative or limiting beliefs that may drain your energy or hinder your progress. Replace these with positive and empowering beliefs that support your growth and success as a coach. Remember, your thoughts shape your reality, so choose thoughts that uplift and empower you.

b. Positive affirmations are a powerful tool for cultivating a positive mindset

Create affirmations that reflect your strengths, abilities, and intentions as a coach. Repeat them daily to reinforce positive self-belief and confidence.

Affirmations such as “I am a skilled and impactful coach” or “I can inspire and empower others” can help shift your mindset towards abundance and self-assurance.

c. Visualization is another technique that can enhance your mindset

Close your eyes and visualize yourself thriving as a coach, positively impacting your clients’ lives, and feeling energized and fulfilled in your work.

Engage all your senses in this visualization, creating a vivid and powerful image of your desired reality. This exercise helps align your mindset with your goals and allows you to tap into the positive energy associated with your vision.

d. Nurturing a positive mindset requires consistent effort and practice.

Surround yourself with positive influences, whether reading uplifting books, listening to motivational podcasts, or connecting with like-minded coaches who inspire you.

Engage in personal development activities that expand your knowledge and skills, fostering a mindset of growth and continuous learning.

Manage Burnout: Recognize and Recharge

Burnout can affect even the most passionate and dedicated coaches. Be vigilant in recognizing signs of burnout, such as exhaustion, cynicism, or decreased motivation. If you experience burnout, take a step back, reassess your workload and priorities, and seek support from mentors or peers. Engage in activities that restore your energy and passion, such as taking breaks, pursuing self-development, or seeking personal coaching.

Love From Your Coach

As a coach, your ability to balance your energy is vital for providing impactful support to your clients. You can maintain a balanced and uplifting energy state by prioritizing self-care, setting energetic boundaries, cultivating a positive mindset, and effectively managing burnout.

Remember, your energy gets reflected in your clients and is interconnected with your client’s growth. So, take care of yourself, and enhance your ability to guide and inspire others.

Imagine yourself as a lighthouse, shining brightly and guiding ships to shore. Just like how the lighthouse chooses which ships to guide and which to let pass, you, too, can set boundaries and decide who gets to enter your life.

Choose to surround yourself with the ones who lift you and bring out the best in you. And when the ones who drain your energy come knocking, don’t be afraid to say no, to prioritize your well-being. Remember that your energy is sacred and should be protected at all costs. Set your boundaries and honour them, for they are the foundation of your well-being.

So, fellow coaches, let us embark on a journey of deep self-work, nurturing our energy, and creating a ripple effect of positive transformation in the lives of those we serve.
